On september sixth, Dan and I celebrated two years of marriage.
where does the time go?
This blog entry is meant to be about our anniversary dinner at a new restaurant, but I will
tell our anniversary story here too.
We planned another trip to las vegas to celebrate our anniversary... thanks to
my husband's amazing skills at the poker table, we had a couple of free nights at the bellagio, my new favorite hotel on the strip.
Only catch was that we couldn't use those free nights on our actual anniversary. This year, the 6th fell on Labor Day exactly, and that happened to be a "black out" date at the hotel... oh well...
2nd anniversary = 2 celebrations. Our big celebration would be in Vegas, but decided we should still do a little something to celebrate on the day of.
Dan had to work a little bit that morning, so he let me sleep in, and said he planned to be back at 10am. I didn't know this meant that I was supposed to be hungry and ready to leave at 10am for breakfast... so when I woke up starving around 8 or 8:30, I went right downstairs and ate a bowl of cereal. Then I puttered around the house for a while, doing laundry & whatnot, before finally getting in the shower at about 9:50. Dan got home just a little bit later and said, "Well, I guess we're not leaving right away!" Nope, definitely not. Two years down, many more years of communication lessons to come, I'm sure.
Finally, we headed out, stopping first to get my morning coffee. We continued on to noah's bagels...mmm... for a late morning snack/my second breakfast. We had decided to go see a movie at bridgeport village, using a gift card we'd had for a while. The movie started about 12:45ish, so we had plenty of time to eat, walk around and chat. We popped into sweet factory right before the movie and filled up little bags to sneak into the theater. Yep, we do it too. sixteen dollars later, we headed over to the theater to get our tickets, and I wondered why we didn't just spend that money on theater candy. It might have been cheaper!
We saw the Leonardo DiCaprio movie inception, and thought it was phenomenal, although, twenty minutes into it, I leaned over to Dan and said, "I have absolutely no idea what's going on in this movie, but i love it!" For those of you who've seen it, you know, if you just hang tight, it all comes together. It was a brilliant movie, great concept, and really makes you think. I definitely need to see it again.
After dinner, we killed some time by heading over to Washington Square to look at new bedding at macy's. Our current comforter and bedding has worn out beyond belief, and two years later, we still had wedding gift money left on a Macy's gift card, so we were hoping to find something to spend it on. no such luck.
(UPDATE: as of 9/22/10, we have successfully spent the last of the wedding gift money on our Macy's gift card. Would not be surprised if we set some sort of record on how long we made our wedding gift money last!)
Finally, it was time to head to
dinner at a new restaurant... to my surprise,
aquariva. What an amazing place. First off, we sat outside one of the back patios over-looking the river. We had the whole deck to ourselves. it was amazing. The view was incredible, the weather was great (although not as perfect as our wedding day 2 years ago), and the food was delicious. The menu was definitely intimidating... as in, one of the appetizers offered was Grilled Baby Octopus. We passed on that one & went with the cheese plate instead.
Still, there were so many gourmet selections, it took some serious decision making. choosing my salad was a slam dunk though... SUMMER CRISP LETTUCE, with PEACHES, RED ONION & WARM BACON VINAIGRETTE... warm bacon vinaigrette? yes, please! Bacon makes everything better. And it did not let me down this time. Hands down, one of the best salads I've ever had!
Now about the entree selection... let me preface this by saying, this is very out of character for me to order, but I had the pan roasted duck breast with wild plum mustarda. I don't the last time, if ever, I've ordered duck. Well, I'm a fan now, because I'd definitely order it again.
Dan went with the arugula, melon, tangerine honey vinaigrette salad and the
ricotta gnocchi with lobster mushrooms & dungeness crab for his entree.
After enjoying dinner, we continued down (up?) the river, and enjoyed dessert overlooking the downtown water front.
As we left dessert, my heart was full from such a fun, relaxing, low-key day and a wonderful evening of celebrating here in our hometown that we love so much. I had no idea there was still more to come.
We were walking back to our car and passed a man who had a single shopping cart packed full with all of his possessions. It was quite clear that this was his
home on wheels. We got in our car and slowly headed down the street. Dan watched silently as the man continued on his way, looking for a place to "land" for the evening. Without saying a word, or any hesitation whatsoever, Dan pulled over,
ran inside to pizza schmizza. I immediately realized what he was doing, and was so overjoyed and filled with love,
i thought i was going to burst.
It seemed to take forever, and while sitting in the car waiting, I'd lost sight of the man, and I was worried he was going to get away. Finally, Dan returned with
two warm slices of pizza & a water, and we headed back down the street looking for the man. We found him, several blocks away, and pulled over and called out to him. We gave him the box with the warm pizza inside, a bottle of water, and a couple of dollars. As Dan told him "GOD BLESS and take care", he
mumbled his appreciation & eagerly accepted our offering. He was so hungry & thirsty, he opened the box and tore into his warm meal so quickly, and I was a
flurry of emotions...
happy he was being fed,
heart-broken that it was probably his first meal in a while,
sad that he might not get another one for who knows how long,
head-over-heels in love with my husband for being so thoughtful, selfless and caring to a complete stranger who was clearly less fortunate than us,
thankful for my husband, our home, our life and our families & friends.
i am beyond blessed.
I had
tears in my eyes on rest of the drive home, all while
i thought my heart would burst right out of my chest. Is there
a better day to be reminded of exactly
why you married your husband than your actual anniversary?
