#89. Join a Small Group
Dan and I have been attending southlake church since the fall of 2007, and we love it. We knew from the first visit that it was the right church for us. We've always felt at home there, but because it is a bigger church, we haven't had an easy time meeting & connecting with new people there. We always talked about finding a small group to join, but there was always some excuse holding us back... getting engaged, planning a wedding, getting married, buying a house, moving, nesting, working, job stuff... the list went on and on.
The purpose behind my whole 101 in 1001 challenge is to quit making excuses and just do it! So one day, shortly after creating this blog and announcing my goals publicly, I knew one of the easiest things to do would be to contact the connection pastor at Southlake and find a group that was right for us. Right around this same time, our friends Ben & Abi started coming to Southlake, and also wanted to find a small group. It's easier to do things with friends, right? Right away, we were connected with a group of twenty & thirty-somethings, and while they had stopped meeting on a weekly basis for the summer, they invited us to join them for a couple of social events over the summer. This was the perfect way to meet everyone in a casual environment and see if we all meshed. I personally felt like the group was very welcoming and that we would fit right in with everyone.
This fall, we started meeting on a regular basis and have started a group study on the Book of Job. It's a challenging study, I think, but as a group, we're finally getting into a groove, and this will work out to be a great study and a great group to be a part of. I also think that this has been a great personal step of faith for me and for Dan.

Congrats! What great encouragement you are to me... my hubby and I too have attended a church for awhile but we need to take the next step of committing to a small group (as in more that just popping in a few times a year...). What an awesome way to continue to grow in your faith and strengthen one another! Way to go!
ReplyDeleteOh thank you Megan! You and your 101 list are a huge encouragement to me also, and I am enjoying following your progress!
ReplyDeleteHave you met my sister and her husband? They go there and are in their 30s. Melissa and Scott Galloway, and their super cute baby Molly who is nearing her first birthday :)
