#44. Try 25 New Restaurants in Portland, OR

the rendevous is one of my parent's favorite restaurants... I'm stretching a bit to put it in this category, because it's actually located in welches, or... which is a bit of a drive from the heart of Portland, OR.  But it's my list, my blog, my rules, and I say it counts, cause it definitely was new for us, and within an hour drive.

My parents had told us they wanted to take us to an anniversary dinner at The Rendevous, but we never really got in planned. (SIDE NOTE:  THIS WHOLE PARENTS-TAKING-US-OUT-FOR-ANNIVERSARY-DINNERS THING IS NEW THIS YEAR. WE DIDN'T GET 1ST ANNIVERSARY DINNERS OUT!  BUT WE WON'T SAY NO NOW!  WE LOVE IT!)  Luckily, Aunt Elizabeth was coming in to town to visit, and we were all planning to go out to dinner while she was here.  We're an efficient group, so we killed two birds with one stone that night.

We all piled into my mom car and drove up to Welches one Friday night.  I was instantly impressed with the place... maybe because my parents were like VIPs, since the minute we walked in, the owner was smiling and waving at them, and my parents already knew the waitress by name... she'd been their server several other times before.

The menu did not disappoint!  We shared the hummus plate for an appetizer and it easily fed our group of 5.  It was so good too... a lot like the McMenamin's hummus plate, of which I've always been a fan, but dare I say it, this one might have been better!!

For dinner, I was having a hard time choosing, but finally decided on the northwest dungeness crab and shrimp cakes... mostly because it came with chipotle aioli and i love all things chipotle.  Which is also probably why I asked to substitute my jasmine rice for the chipotle mashed sweet potatoes.  Yep, you read that right... it was chipotle heaven on a plate for me that night!  Mmm.

We had to have dessert too of course!  Mostly because all of their desserts are handmade, in house, and all of the fruit is locally grown, with the exception of the citrus.  I can't remember everything that we had, because they don't have a dessert menu.  They tempt you with a dessert tray, so you can see how absolutely delicious everything looks before you order.

We would have ordered one of everything, but managed to keep our choices down to three... ... one key lime cake-like dessert, another was a lemon raspberry dish that melted in your mouth, and my choice was the hand-made caramel ice cream with caramel sauce.  It was all so, so good!  Best desserts I've had in a long time.  They even put a candle in the caramel ice cream dessert after it was announced that we were celebrating our anniversary!

We would definitely want to go back to the Rendevous... maybe sometime when we're up at the mountain and heading down after a day of #42, downhill skiing.
